Project Overview

In this project, we developed a prototype of an instructional design for a Test theory course, in the format of a mobile learning app called Stats Up. As mobile learning can be defined as the use of mobile or wireless devices for the purpose of learning while on the move (Park, 2011), we want to facilitate students’ learning on the way, for instance with their smartphones in public transport. The aim of the mobile learning app Stats Up is to foster motivation and self-regulated learning, and to create an engaging mobile learning environment for revision of test theory course content. The target group for Stats Up users embraces RTL Master Students in their second semester who enroll in the test theory course mandatory to the RTL program. The students should possess prior knowledge of statistics from the introductory statistics course in their first semester, or previous Bachelor or Master Programs. The environment of the mobile learning app includes students’ individual phones outside class, thus additionally to the test theory lectures. Stats Up should be presented during the first course session so that students can immediately start studying with the app next to following the theoretical lectures. Thus, the learning objective is not only to support RTL students’ learning process of test theories, but also to fully understand the theoretically delivered course content by additional revisions on Stats Up.
