About Bibi

Bibi, derived from “bibliothek”, is a pedagogical agent (PA) designed for Masters students in the Research on Teaching and Learning (RTL) program at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) - School of Education.

Project Overview

The designed pedagogical agent should foster reading competency and scaffold reading content through prompting, as well as offer feedback on the user’s reading strategy. This agent was developed based on teaching tenets and theories, existing literature, and previous studies.

Details

The flowchart shows the sequence of implementation. The Bibi PA and accompanying platform were designed for the “Models of educational theories” course in the Master in Research in Teaching and Learning program. On the platform, students first have to complete a reading self-perception questionnaire and training to use active reading strategies in stage two. Two texts (about two basic psychological theories: behaviorism and constructivism) are then made available to the user in stage three. For each text, students complete a prior context-knowledge quiz about the specific text. This combination of responses from the questionnaire and quiz establish a user profile, which is used during the fourth “Read with Bibi” stage to individualize frequency and type of prompting for the student. In the final and fifth stage, Bibi gives feedback so students can assess their reading strategies and comprehension. Both stages four and five are specific to the reading and requires students to provide inputs that the pedagogical agent will then evaluate and respond accordingly.
